About Neuropsychological Evaluations
A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of how the brain is functioning — measuring cognitive strengths, identifying challenges, and guiding next steps.
What Is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation is an in-depth assessment conducted by a licensed neuropsychologist. It uses standardized, validated tests to measure a range of cognitive and emotional functions, including:
- Attention and concentration
- Learning and memory
- Language and verbal abilities
- Visual-spatial processing
- Processing speed
- Executive functions (planning, reasoning, problem-solving)
- Emotional and behavioral functioning
Together, these measures create a detailed picture of how an individual's brain is working — identifying areas of strength and pinpointing challenges that may explain academic struggles, behavioral concerns, or cognitive changes.
Who Can Benefit?
Neuropsychological evaluations are valuable for college students, adults, and older adults. Common reasons people seek an evaluation include:
College Students & Adults
- Academic accommodations (college, grad school)
- Attention and executive function concerns
- Testing accommodations for licensing exams
- Career and vocational planning
Older Adults
- Memory loss and early cognitive decline
- Differential diagnosis (dementia, depression)
- Parkinson's and other movement disorders
- Baseline cognitive assessment
Medical & Neurological
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Stroke and cerebrovascular disease
- Brain tumor or surgical planning
- Post-COVID cognitive symptoms
What to Expect: The Evaluation Process
Initial Consultation
We begin with a thorough clinical interview to understand your history, concerns, and the specific questions you want answered. This helps us design the evaluation to address your individual needs.
Neuropsychological Testing
Testing typically takes 4–8 hours depending on complexity. You will complete a variety of tasks that measure different cognitive abilities. Most tests feel more like puzzles or games than medical procedures. Our neuropsychologist is present throughout.
Scoring & Interpretation
After testing, your results are carefully scored and compared to established norms for your age, education, and background. This process takes 1–3 weeks as we integrate all data into a comprehensive picture.
Feedback Session
We meet with you (and family members or caregivers, if appropriate) to explain findings in plain language, answer your questions, and discuss specific recommendations for treatment, accommodations, and next steps.
Written Report
You receive a comprehensive written report documenting the evaluation, results, and recommendations — suitable for sharing with physicians, schools, or other professionals.
How to Prepare
To get the most accurate results from your evaluation:
- Get a full night of sleep before your appointment
- Eat a nutritious meal and stay hydrated
- Take your regular medications as prescribed (unless instructed otherwise)
- Avoid alcohol the night before
- Bring glasses, hearing aids, or other sensory aids
- Bring any prior evaluation reports, school records, or medical records
